Colin Farrell To Star In BBC Twos The North Water
BBC Two has confirmed that Colin Farrell will star in its upcoming period drama The North Water, marking one of the broadcaster’s most ambitious literary adaptations in recent years.
The series is based on the acclaimed novel by Ian McGuire, a brutal and unflinching tale set aboard a 19th-century whaling ship bound for the Arctic. Farrell will play Henry Drax, a harpooner described as a force of pure malevolence, whose presence threatens everyone on board.
The North Water also stars Jack O’Connell as Patrick Sumner, a disgraced former army surgeon seeking redemption by joining the doomed expedition. The relationship between Drax and Sumner forms the moral and psychological core of the story.
Farrell’s casting represents a significant coup for BBC Two. Known for his intense screen presence and willingness to embrace challenging roles, the actor has undergone a dramatic physical transformation for the part, signalling the uncompromising tone of the series.
The adaptation has been written by Andrew Haigh, whose previous work includes 45 Years and Looking. His involvement suggests a character-led approach that prioritises psychological realism over conventional period drama tropes.
Filmed on location in the Arctic and using practical effects wherever possible, The North Water aims for authenticity rather than romanticism. The environment itself is presented as an antagonist, amplifying the brutality of the narrative.
BBC Two has positioned the series as prestige drama, continuing its tradition of bold literary adaptations aimed at adult audiences. The channel has increasingly differentiated itself through challenging, auteur-driven projects.
The series explores themes of survival, moral collapse and the thin veneer of civilisation, reflecting anxieties that remain relevant despite the historical setting.
Production was logistically demanding, with cast and crew operating in extreme conditions. The BBC has highlighted this commitment as central to the series’ immersive quality.
A broadcast date has yet to be confirmed, but The North Water is expected to be a major centrepiece of BBC Two’s drama schedule.
