Outlander has found its Mother Hildegarde. Vicious and Harry Potter star Frances de la Tour has been cast as the commanding Mother Superior in the upcoming 13 episode second season of Starz’s hit period drama Outlander, TVWise can reveal.
A key figure in the second book Dragonfly In Amber (which season two is based on), Mother Hildegarde is the intelligent and commanding Mother Superior who runs L’Hopital Des Anges in Paris. A tall, gaunt woman with a deep and powerful voice, Hildegarde comes from an aristocratic, well-connected family.
Frances de la Tour is an accomplished actress whose career spans five decades across theatre, film & television. On the TV side, her many credits include Poirot, Waking The Dead, Marple, New Tricks and BBC One’s Big School. She is also a regular on the ITV sitcom Vicious (pictured), which is currently in the middle of its second season and airs on PBS in the United States.
She is the latest actor to board Outlander for its second season. TVWise previously revealed that Audrey Brisson has been cast as Sister Angelique, one of Mother Hidegarde’s nuns; while Dominique Piñon was also recently cast in a starring role as Master Raymond, a small kindly apothecary who is described as being “a mysterious healer” with a great deal of knowledge regarding secret matters, both political and occult.
Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander was developed for television by Ronald D. Moore and stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzes, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Duncan Lacroix, Annette Badland, Lotte Verbeek and Stephen Walters also star. The drama series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Outlander’s second season, which will run “at least” 13 episodes, is currently in production in Scotland for a 2016 premiere on Starz. The sophomore season is based on Dragonfly In Amber, the second book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series, and follows Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in Paris, France, as they attempt to prevent the Jacobite uprisings, which Claire knows will end in disaster.
