5STAR Sets Premiere Date for Riverdale
5STAR has officially confirmed that Riverdale made its UK free to air debut on 7 January 2019, marking the first time the cult teen drama aired outside of subscription streaming platforms.
The move brought the hugely popular CW series to a much wider audience, allowing viewers without Netflix access to finally immerse themselves in the darkly reimagined world of Archie Comics.
For Channel 5’s youth skewing sister network, the acquisition was a statement of intent, boosting its slate with one of the most talked-about US imports of the time.
The arrival of Riverdale on 5STAR allowed audiences to experience the show from the very beginning. Premiering in the United States in January 2017, the series had already become a sensation with its moody blend of small-town intrigue, teenage angst, and noir stylings.
By airing the first season in full, 5STAR ensured UK audiences who hadn’t followed the show on Netflix could catch up on every twist and turn of the now infamous murder mystery surrounding Jason Blossom.
At the heart of the show is Archie Andrews, played by KJ Apa, alongside Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).
While these characters originated in the wholesome world of Archie Comics, Riverdale reimagines them in a darker, more dangerous setting. Secrets, corruption, and unexpected betrayals dominate life in the town, giving the familiar names a completely fresh edge that resonated strongly with teen and young adult audiences.
5STAR’s decision to air Riverdale was part of a wider programming strategy to attract younger demographics with glossy, addictive US dramas. The show’s blend of teen romance, soap-opera dynamics, and sinister mystery made it a natural fit for the channel. Positioned alongside reality series and contemporary dramas, Riverdale gave the schedule a prestige boost while capitalising on the global buzz surrounding the show.
The free-to-air launch also reflected a broader trend in UK television at the time: bringing streaming hits to traditional broadcasters to capture audiences who either preferred scheduled viewing or didn’t subscribe to platforms like Netflix. For many, 5STAR’s run of Riverdale was their first exposure to the stylish, suspense-laden drama, allowing the show to expand its cultural reach in Britain.
Critical reception in the UK mirrored that of the US, with viewers praising the show’s atmosphere and willingness to subvert expectations of the teen drama genre. While some critics pointed out its occasionally over-the-top storytelling, fans embraced exactly those qualities, revelling in the heightened melodrama and gothic sensibility. Its campy yet compelling tone helped Riverdale stand apart from more grounded teen shows like Skins or 13 Reasons Why.
Although the 5STAR broadcast began with season one in 2019, the show itself ultimately spanned seven seasons, concluding in August 2023. Its legacy is one of bold reinvention, taking familiar comic-book characters and thrusting them into a world of crime, corruption, and mystery.
For UK audiences, its arrival on 5STAR was a landmark moment, demonstrating how free-to-air networks could ride the wave of streaming popularity to deliver must-see TV to a broader public.
By bringing Riverdale to terrestrial screens, 5STAR ensured that the small town with big secrets became a fixture for an even larger fan base. It was a move that not only bolstered the channel’s reputation but also cemented Riverdale’s place as one of the defining teen dramas of the past decade.
