Canadas Space Channel Cancels Primeval New World
Canada’s Space Channel has confirmed that it will not be moving forward with a second season of Primeval: New World, effectively cancelling the sci-fi drama after just one run. The news brings an early end to the spin-off of the popular UK series Primeval, which had been pitched as a darker, more adult take on the original franchise.
Launched in 2012, Primeval: New World followed a team of scientists and animal experts in Vancouver who confronted dangerous prehistoric creatures entering the present day through mysterious time anomalies. The series starred Niall Matter, Sara Canning, and Danny Rahim, and it also featured guest appearances from Andrew Lee Potts, reprising his role as Connor Temple from the UK original. Despite a promising premise and international fan interest, the show struggled to maintain the ratings needed to justify continuation.
The cancellation comes as a disappointment to fans who had hoped the spin-off would carry on the legacy of the original Primeval, which enjoyed five seasons on ITV and developed a cult following. While Primeval: New World attempted to appeal to a more mature audience, blending action, science fiction, and character-driven drama, it never achieved the same momentum or critical reception as its predecessor.
Industry insiders suggest that budget concerns and the high cost of visual effects also played a role in the decision. Like its UK counterpart, the show relied heavily on CGI to bring prehistoric creatures to life, and while the effects were ambitious, the production costs may have been difficult to sustain without stronger ratings.
The series did, however, attract international distribution, airing in multiple countries including the UK, where it was broadcast on Watch. This international exposure gave it a broader audience, but ultimately the numbers were not enough to secure its survival.
For many viewers, the cancellation is bittersweet. On one hand, it confirms the end of new adventures within the Primeval universe for now. On the other, fans remain grateful that the spin-off expanded the mythology and offered a new perspective on the concept, even if only for a single season.
The cancellation of Primeval: New World also underscores the challenge of creating successful spin-offs in an increasingly competitive television landscape. While brand recognition can generate initial interest, shows still need strong ratings and sustainable budgets to survive.
Though its run was short, Primeval: New World remains a notable attempt to build on a beloved franchise and bring Canadian sci-fi storytelling to the forefront. Its single season will continue to find life through streaming, DVD releases, and a loyal fanbase that continues to celebrate both the original series and its ambitious spin-off.
