SYFY UK Drops ’12 Monkeys’ After Three Seasons

EXCLUSIVE: Bad news for 12 Monkeys fans. I’ve learned that SYFY UK has opted not to acquire the fourth and final season of the sci-fi series from their sister company NBCUniversal International Distribution. It is not immediately clear if either Netflix UK or Amazon Prime Video UK – both of whom hold SVOD rights to the first three seasons – will swoop for the final season.

Created by Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett, 12 Monkeys tells the story of a time traveler from a decimated future in a high-stakes race against the clock to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will all but annihilate the human race. The drama series is produced by Universal Cable Productions and stars Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, Kirk Acevedo, Emily Hampshire, Barbara Sukowa and Todd Stashwick.

In a departure from normal scheduling, and mirroring the strategy of the U.S. SYFY network, SYFY UK opted to air season three using a binge-model, with the complete season airing over three consecutive days in May of last year. Even with this decision to drop 12 Monkeys, SYFY UK has a healthy slate of first run U.S. scripted acquisitions, including: The CW’s The Outpost, Freeform’s Siren, Hulu originals Future Man and Marvel’s Runaways, NBC’s Midnight, Texas and Reverie, and the Syfy original series Killjoys.
