Portugal and Croatia meet in what promises to be one of the most intriguing ties of the knockout stage, with two of European football’s most consistent nations going head to head in Toronto for a place in the last 16.

Portugal progressed from Group K as runners-up, finishing two points behind Colombia after a mixed group stage campaign.

A 1-1 draw with DR Congo in the opener was a poor result given the level of expectation around Roberto Martinez’s side, though they responded emphatically with a 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice to become the first player in history to score in six consecutive World Cup editions.

A goalless draw with Colombia on the final matchday then saw them settle for second place.

Portugal have been unbeaten in eight matches since losing to the Republic of Ireland in qualifying, conceding just four goals and keeping four clean sheets in that run.

Ronaldo spearheads the attack once again, with Joao Neves expected to return to the starting lineup after being rotated against Colombia, alongside Vitinha in midfield and Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 role behind him.

History offers some encouragement too. Portugal beat Croatia in the round of 16 at Euro 2016 on their way to lifting the trophy, and they have won five of their last six competitive meetings.

Croatia arrive in Toronto having recovered well from a 4-2 opening defeat to England, winning their next two matches against Panama and Ghana to finish second in Group L.

Luka Modric became the oldest player to register a World Cup assist in the 2-1 win over Ghana, with Nikola Vlasic netting the late winner, and Zlatko Dalic’s side arrive with genuine belief they can go deep in the tournament for the third time in eight years.

Josko Gvardiol is expected to return at left back after being surprisingly left out against Ghana, with Ivan Perisic moving further forward on the left flank as a result.

Modric should partner Mateo Kovacic in midfield, with Petar Sucic completing the trio after an impressive goal against Ghana. Ante Budimir leads the attack.

Four of Croatia’s last 16 defeats have come against higher ranked opposition, which is a concern heading into a tie against a Portugal side sitting fifth in the FIFA world rankings.
