What channel is Newcastle v Everton on?

Newcastle were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at Everton on Thursday, losing 3-1 after a goalless first half. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry all scored in a 25-minute spell after the break, and Dan Burn’s late reply came too late to matter for the side who won this competition two seasons ago.

That made it three defeats in four in all competitions for Matthias Jaissle, though the 2-0 league win at Crystal Palace the previous weekend kept them in the top half. Defending remains the concern, after heavy defeats at Coventry and Leeds, and Newcastle have won only one of their four home league games and are still waiting for a clean sheet at St James’ Park this season.

Will Osula twisted his ankle on Thursday and is a doubt, as are Lewis Miley with a muscle problem and Matias Fernandez-Pardo after illness. Ewen Jaouen and Tino Livramento are both out, and if Osula misses out Yoane Wissa should come in up front, with Joelinton expected to return to midfield.

Everton’s cup win sets up a quarter-final at Fleetwood, the League Two side who knocked out Arsenal. David Moyes will hope that result also lifts his side’s league form, which has dipped badly after an unbeaten first six games.

Everton have lost their last two Premier League games without scoring, the most recent a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in which they conceded twice from set pieces and crosses. They are still looking for a first away league win of the season.

Jack Grealish was left out of the cup tie for a breach of club discipline and there is no guarantee he returns here. Brennan Johnson and Tyrique George started out wide at the Emirates, but Tyler Dibling could be in line for a Premier League start after impressing in the cup, and Jarrad Branthwaite is expected to be cleared to return after concussion.

Everton have had the upper hand in this fixture recently, and Thursday’s result means Newcastle go into the rematch with something to prove in front of their own supporters.
