What channel is Everton v Newcastle on?

Everton started the season with an eight-game unbeaten run, but they have now lost back to back league games by the same 2-0 scoreline, at home to Chelsea and then at Arsenal last weekend. That has dropped David Moyes’s side into the bottom half, five points behind Liverpool in fourth.

Goals have been the problem all season, with Everton among the lowest scorers in the division. Their unbeaten start was built on defending, with a goalless draw at Tottenham, a 1-0 win over Ipswich and a 2-2 draw at Hull among the results.

The cup has been kinder. Everton won 4-0 at Preston in the second round and then edged past Wolves 1-0 in the third, substitute Charly Alcaraz scoring the winner shortly after coming on, and Moyes will see a deep run as a realistic target this season.

Jarrad Branthwaite misses out with concussion after sitting out the defeat at Arsenal, and Jack Grealish is a doubt after illness kept him out last weekend. With a small squad, Moyes is not expected to make sweeping changes, but Michael Keane and Ainsley Maitland-Niles could come into the defence, Hayden Hackney, Christian Norgaard and Alcaraz are competing for midfield places, and Tyler Dibling, the standout player in the last round, is pushing for a start.

Newcastle have steadied after a difficult spell. Three defeats in four, including a 4-1 loss at Coventry and a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, had put Matthias Jaissle under pressure, but Sunday’s 2-0 win at Crystal Palace lifted them to eighth, two points off the top five.

Jaissle brought more experience into the side at Selhurst Park and it paid off, with Harvey Barnes and William Osula on the scoresheet. The Magpies won this competition two seasons ago and have already seen off two Championship sides this time, beating West Brom 3-2 at home and Millwall 1-0 away.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo is a doubt with illness and Lewis Miley with a knock, while Tino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen remain out with knee and thigh injuries. Jaissle has said he will name a strong side again, so Barnes and Osula should keep their places, with Yoane Wissa, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Anthony Elanga and the recently fit Jacob Ramsey all pushing for starts.

Newcastle will bring almost 8,000 supporters for the first League Cup meeting between the clubs since 2002, and the two sides meet again in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Monday night.
