Tottenham are still looking for a first goal of the season, never mind a first win. A 3-0 defeat at Brentford was followed by a 2-0 home loss to Newcastle, before a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest brought a first point.

There were signs of improvement in that one, with 59 per cent of the ball and 11 attempts. Not one of them was on target.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side are one of three teams yet to score in the division, alongside Aston Villa and Coventry City. Failing to score in the opening four league games would be a first in the club’s history.

The injury list is not helping. James Maddison remains a doubt with a shoulder problem, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons are all working back from knee injuries, and Mykhaylo Mudryk has picked up an ankle problem that will keep him out for six to eight weeks.

Everton arrive unbeaten. They opened with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, drew 1-1 at Bournemouth thanks to a stoppage time James Tarkowski header, and then drew 2-2 with Manchester United last weekend.

Deadline day signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles rescued that point with a strike from 25 yards, some consolation for a summer in which the club failed to land the striker it wanted.

Travelling remains the problem. David Moyes has not seen his side win any of their last six league away games, and Everton have lost five in a row on the road at Tottenham.

James Garner is not yet back to full fitness and Christian Norgaard is out until October. Jack Grealish is available again after a bright showing against United.

There is an oddity in the head to head. Spurs have won just once in their last 12 home league games, and that solitary victory came against Everton on the final day of last season.
