Despite spending well over £400 million in the summer, Liverpool have fallen short of last season’s standards and sit 11 points behind where they were at the same stage a year ago.
The Reds were top of the Premier League at Christmas last season but head into the festive period in fifth place this time around.
On the pitch Liverpool appear to have steadied themselves.
Saturday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, played against nine men, made it three victories in a row in all competitions. That success came without Salah, who is currently away on international duty at AFCON, yet the Reds still found a way to get the job done.
Injuries remain a concern, with Slot facing further disruption after a key attacking option was forced off at the weekend. Even so, Liverpool’s forward depth has eased the impact, with strong recent performances from within the squad helping to maintain momentum.
Any lingering doubts should be eased by the opposition arriving at Anfield. Liverpool have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning 16 of their last 17 Premier League meetings with Wolverhampton Wanderers, underlining why they are heavy favourites once again.
Wolves’ situation is bleak. They sit bottom of the table and are still without a league win this season, a position from which no club has ever survived relegation. Their winless run now stretches to 21 Premier League matches, and a flat performance against Brentford last weekend has left them 16 points adrift of safety already.
Defeat would extend an unwanted club record, with Wolves having already lost their last 10 league games, the longest losing streak in their top flight history. Only three teams have ever lost 10 or more consecutive Premier League matches in a single season.
With just two points on the board, Wolves are staring down the barrel of an historically poor campaign and are on course to challenge Derby County’s record-low Premier League points tally of 11. Injuries have further stripped Gary O’Neil’s side of attacking threat, while Liverpool have recorded two clean sheets in their last three outings.
Even a Liverpool side that struggled for form earlier in the campaign would expect to overcome a Wolves team in such disarray.
Given the Reds’ recent wins over Inter Milan, Brighton and Tottenham, it is difficult to envisage anything other than another comfortable home victory and a 12th straight league defeat for the visitors.
