The Gunners were pushed all the way in midweek, needing a penalty shootout to edge past Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. However, Arteta rotated heavily for that clash, meaning Arsenal should be relatively fresh heading into this fixture.

Brighton arrive in north London on a difficult run of form, extending their winless streak to four matches after a 0-0 draw with Sunderland at the weekend.

That sequence does little to inspire confidence against an Arsenal side who have won seven and drawn one of their eight Premier League home games this season.

Arsenal’s grip on top spot has not come without fortune. Last time out against bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers, they required two own goals, including a dramatic 94th minute intervention, to secure all three points.

That was followed by another important league victory on Saturday night, as the Gunners navigated a potentially tricky trip to Everton with a narrow 1-0 win and yet another clean sheet.

That result ensured Arsenal sit top of the Premier League at Christmas for the third time in four seasons, something they managed only twice across the competition’s first 30 campaigns.

History offers a note of caution, though, with the Gunners going on to finish second or third on each of the previous four occasions they have led the table at this stage.

Defensively, Arsenal’s early season solidity has begun to wobble slightly.

Injuries to Gabriel, Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera have forced Arteta into deploying a makeshift back line, contributing to the fact they have kept just three clean sheets in their last 10 matches. Even so, they will still back themselves against a Brighton side also dealing with fitness and availability issues.

The Seagulls’ struggles in December are becoming a familiar theme.

They are now without a win in their last 10 Premier League games played this month, drawing six and losing four since a 4-2 victory over Tottenham in 2023. Only April represents a worse month for Brighton in terms of win percentage in the Premier League.

This will be Brighton’s second visit to the Emirates already this season, having been beaten 2-0 here by Arsenal in the EFL Cup back in October.

With the Gunners’ formidable home record and Brighton’s ongoing difficulties, a similar outcome looks likely once again, with Arsenal well placed to extend their lead at the summit.
