Neither side has lost this season, which makes the table look stranger than it should. Chelsea are third, Arsenal sixth, two points between them.
Chelsea are trying to win back a title that was theirs for six seasons until Manchester City took it last term. A 1-1 draw with Aston Villa was followed by a 5-0 win at Manchester United and a 2-0 defeat of Birmingham City.
Three clean sheets in a row have come with it.
Europe was less convincing. Sonia Bompastor’s side rode their luck to beat Austria Wien 1-0 in the Champions League opener, and more will be needed here if Chelsea are to reach 14 games without defeat in normal time, a run that started when Arsenal beat them in March.
Arsenal are unbeaten too and have looked laboured throughout. A 1-0 win over Brighton was followed by a goalless draw with newly promoted Crystal Palace, then a 1-1 with Manchester United rescued in the 95th minute.
Koge were beaten 1-0 in Europe courtesy of a stoppage time Mariona Caldentey penalty. Three goals in four games is the problem, and Renee Slegers now has Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham inside her next five fixtures.
Manaka Matsukkubo, Erin Cuthbert and Mayra Ramirez are all out for Chelsea, with Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones doubtful having missed the last two matchday squads. Keira Walsh will be assessed after going off in the first half in midweek.
Arsenal remain without Daphne van Domselaar, Katie Reid and Michelle Agyemang, all with knee injuries, while summer signing Elisa De Almeida misses a third straight game. Misa Rodriguez is expected to return in goal.
Katie McCabe could start against the club she left in the summer after 11 years. Chelsea have won six of the last eight competitive home meetings between the two, and Arsenal have failed to win seven of their last eight league visits, the exception a 2-0 in January.
