UKTV’s Dave Channel Moving Forward With Sports Push With ‘Ultimate Strongman: World Championship’

ultimate-strongmanDave is moving forward with their push into sports programming. The UKTV owned channel has secured the exclusive broadcast rights to the first Ultimate Strongman: World Championship, TVWise has learned.

Filmed in-front of a live audience in Newcastle on December 10th, Ultimate Strongman: World Championship sees twelve of the world’s biggest and strongest athletes – including Eddie ‘The Beast’ Hall, Europe’s Strongest Man Laurence Shahlaei and four-time World’s Strongest Man Zydrunas Savickas – compete over five events.

The deal UKTV inked to secure the broadcast rights to the World Championship also gives them rights to the Under-25 event, Ultimate Strongman: Next Generation, which took place in Canada earlier this year. Next Generation will air on Dave on December 29th, with World Championship following on December 30th. Coverage is being provided by Ultimate Strongman Productions Ltd. Matt Bell will host the coverage, which will also feature commentary from Nick Halling and Svend Karlsen. The executive producer for UKTV is Arch Dyson.

“The inaugural Ultimate Strongman: World Championship is a great opportunity for us to shape a new kind of strongman event for television”, Richard Watsham, UKTV’s Director of Commissioning, said in a statement. “It’s going to be a lively mix of sport and entertainment with high production values and an outstanding lineup of athletes. The perfect antidote to Christmas.”

Dave only dipped their toe into the waters of sports programming earlier this year with the David Haye fight, which broke ratings records. Since then, the channel has been pursuing more sports programming, inking deals for the broadcast rights to both British Darts Organisation World Trophy and Hero Caribbean Premier League Cricket (CPL); leading to this agreement for Ultimate Strongman.

“We’re hugely excited to have Ultimate Strongman on our channel”, added Steve North, General Manager of Dave. “It’s another new step as we continue to bring more sport to free-to-air television, and is sure to entertain the whole family and be a great end to an excellent year for Dave.”
