Channel 5 has closed a deal with FremantleMedia International to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to Australian drama series Wentworth. The acquisition follows on from Channel 5’s recent deals to acquire A&E’s mini-series Coma, History’s mini-series The Bible and RTE’s drama series Love/Hate. Wentworth is set to premiere on Channel 5 later this year.

A reboot of Australian drama series Prisoner Cell Block H, Wentworth is set in the violent dangerous environment of the Wentworth Correctional Centre and follows struggles with inmates and provides insights into their fractious personal lives. The series is produced by FremantleMedia Australia and stars Shareena Clanton, Celia Ireland, Kate Atkinson, Robbie Magasiva, Aaron Jeffery, Catherine McClements, Kris McQuade, Danielle Cormack and Nicole Da Silva.

Speaking of Wentworth, Katie Keenan, Channel 5’s Head of Acquisitions, said: “Wentworth will be a great addition to Channel 5’s drama output this autumn. This compelling cast of female characters packs an emotional punch and will appeal to the Channel 5 viewers who love our range of crime output from dramas to factual series”

While Justin Hatfield, FremantleMedia International’s Senior Vice-President of Sales for the UK, Eire & Scandinavia, added, “I’m thrilled to bring this gripping series to UK audiences on Channel 5, a channel that has such a strong reputation for diverse drama content.”
