Mexico v South Africa on TV: Live Streaming Details

The 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on Thursday evening as co hosts Mexico take on South Africa in the tournament opener at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

It is a repeat of the very first game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which finished 1-1, and both nations will be hoping for a very different outcome this time around.

Mexico make history just by taking part, becoming the first nation to host the men’s World Cup three times following their standalone editions in 1970 and 1986.

An 83,000 crowd is expected at the Azteca, and the atmosphere will be one of the great occasions in the tournament’s history.

Javier Aguirre’s side come into the tournament in strong form.

After a difficult end to 2025, El Tri have found their rhythm in 2026, holding Portugal and Belgium to draws before winning their last three against Ghana, Australia and Serbia, including a 5-1 thrashing of Serbia in Toluca last Friday.

Mexico are unbeaten in their last seven World Cup openers dating back to 1994, and will be determined to start Group A positively before they face South Korea and Czech Republic.

Raul Jimenez leads the attack and needs just one goal to become Mexico’s joint second all time leading scorer. Teenage sensation Gilberto Mora could also start in midfield, giving Aguirre a big selection call to make.

South Africa are back at the World Cup for the first time since hosting it in 2010. Bafana Bafana qualified through a dramatic final round of CAF qualifying, finishing top of their group with 18 points despite having three deducted for fielding an ineligible player.

Hugo Broos’ side arrive having gone four games without a win in friendly matches, and the Belgian coach admitted his players fell short of expectations in a 1-1 draw with Jamaica last Saturday.

Burnley striker Lyle Foster leads the attack, while Orlando Pirates winger Oswin Appollis contributed six goals in qualifying and will carry a real threat on the counter.
