England face Costa Rica at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando on Wednesday night in their final World Cup warm-up, with the tournament opener against Croatia in Dallas just seven days away.
Thomas Tuchel’s side laboured to a 1-0 win over New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday, with Harry Kane’s 79th international goal the only moment of real quality in a forgettable match. Tuchel was open about his disappointment, and this is his last opportunity to settle on his first-choice World Cup XI before the serious business begins.
The good news is that Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke have all now joined the squad after their Champions League final commitments with Arsenal. Rice and Saka are expected to go straight into the starting lineup, which should give England a much sharper look than they showed against New Zealand.
Jude Bellingham, Reece James and Nico O’Reilly are also pushing for starts, while John Stones and Marc Guehi are likely to continue as the central defensive pairing. If Tuchel names a closer-to-full-strength side, England’s attacking quality should be far more evident against a Costa Rica team short on confidence.
Costa Rica failed to qualify for the World Cup despite winning all four of their opening CONCACAF qualifying matches. Four draws from six in the third round proved costly and they finished below Haiti and Honduras. Head coach Miguel Herrera left immediately after, with former Venezuela boss Fernando Batista now in charge.
Batista is still waiting for a first win, with a 2-2 draw against Jordan, a 5-0 loss to Iran and a 3-1 defeat to Colombia making up his record so far. Joel Campbell, the 150-cap former Arsenal winger, was not called up for this camp, and strikers Kenneth Vargas, Warren Madrigal and Alejandro Bran were all axed for disciplinary reasons. Manfred Ugalde leads the attack and will carry Costa Rica’s main goal threat.
