West Bromwich Albion have dismissed Ryan Mason as head coach following a dramatic late defeat to Leicester City, a result that proved to be the final blow in a worrying run of form.
Mason’s fate was sealed after a 94th minute winner from Abdul Fatawu handed West Brom their fourth defeat in five matches at the King Power Stadium.
The loss continued Albion’s slide down the EFL Championship table and intensified pressure that had been building for several weeks.
Appointed in the summer, Mason was handed his first senior managerial role at The Hawthorns and initially made a positive impression. However, results soon deteriorated and West Brom have taken just 14 points from a possible 42 since the start of November. That downturn has seen the club drift away from the play off conversation and begin looking nervously over their shoulder.
Supporter frustration has grown as performances declined, and with Albion now firmly in the bottom half, the board opted to make a change in the dugout.
Attention has already turned to who could succeed Mason, with several familiar and emerging names linked to the vacancy.
Carlos Corberan
A return for Carlos Corberan would be warmly received by many West Brom fans. Corberan left the club on Christmas Day 2024 to take charge of Valencia, but his side are currently struggling near the relegation zone in La Liga. With pressure mounting in Spain, a reunion has been floated, although questions remain over whether his pragmatic style aligns with Albion’s long term vision.
Michael Carrick
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is another name under consideration. Carrick was dismissed by Middlesbrough after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, but previously led the club to a fourth place finish in 2022-23. While tactical inflexibility proved costly in his first job, he remains highly rated and could be tempted by the Hawthorns vacancy.
Brian Barry Murphy
West Brom may also look further down the leagues. Brian Barry-Murphy, currently in charge of Cardiff City, has impressed since returning to first team management. After time coaching Manchester City EDS, Barry Murphy has Cardiff sitting top of EFL League One. His inexperience at Championship level may be a concern given Albion’s recent gamble on a first time manager.
Richie Wellens
Richie Wellens has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. His work at Leyton Orient has earned widespread praise, having guided the club from relegation trouble to promotion contenders. Although Orient have endured a tougher 2025-26 season, the scale and ambition of West Brom could prove hard to resist.
With Albion eager to halt their slide and re establish momentum, the next appointment will be crucial. After a disappointing experiment with a rookie manager, the club now face a pivotal decision as they look to steady the ship and revive their Championship campaign.
