The 2026 French Open women’s final is one of the most unexpected in the tournament’s history, with two first-time Grand Slam finalists meeting on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Saturday afternoon.
Mirra Andreeva and Maja Chwalinska have arrived at the final by completely different routes, and neither player has ever lifted a major title. That is guaranteed to change on Saturday.
Andreeva, the 19-year-old eighth seed, booked her place in the final with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 win over Marta Kostyuk on Thursday, ending the Ukrainian’s 17-match winning streak in the process. The Russian teenager has been in outstanding form throughout the fortnight, dropping just seven games across her last two matches.
She already has two titles to her name in 2026 and was a finalist in Madrid. Since the season switched to clay, Andreeva has been difficult to live with, and her comfort on the Roland Garros surface is no coincidence. She won a silver medal in the women’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympics on these same courts.
Chwalinska’s run to the final is one of the great stories of this year’s tournament. The 24-year-old Pole entered the draw ranked 114th in the world and had to win three rounds of qualifying just to reach the main draw. Nine matches later, she finds herself in a Grand Slam final for the first time.
Her semi-final win over Diana Shnaider, 7-6(4), 6-4, came just hours after Shnaider had beaten world number one Aryna Sabalenka. Chwalinska has been aggressive and fearless throughout, and has now beaten four top-50 opponents in a single tournament for the first time in her career.
The pair have never met on tour before, making Saturday’s final a fascinating unknown. Andreeva is a heavy favourite with the bookmakers, but Chwalinska has shown this fortnight that rankings and seedings mean nothing once she crosses the baseline.
