Both sides are unbeaten in the league after three games and both sit on five points, with Newcastle marginally ahead on goal difference.

Leeds opened with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest before drawing 1-1 with Brentford and then 1-1 at Brighton, where Jayden Bogle’s opener was cancelled out by Luka Vuskovic.

Midweek brought their first defeat in any competition. Two goals up at Stamford Bridge in the cup, Daniel Farke’s side were beaten 6-3 by Chelsea once Xabi Alonso emptied his bench.

Avoiding defeat here would give Leeds an unbeaten start to a Premier League season of a kind they have rarely managed. They have been hard to beat for a while now, though a lot of those games have ended level.

Leeds came out of Wednesday without fresh injuries and Ilia Gruev could return from a knee problem. Joe Rodon faces eight to 10 weeks out with a thigh injury, while Mateo Joseph is still working back from an ACL problem.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin will fancy this one. Newcastle are among his favourite opponents and he has a long record of scoring against them.

Newcastle have drawn 2-2 with Liverpool, won 2-0 at Tottenham and then come from two down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth. They also scored at least twice in every game until Wednesday’s 1-0 cup win at Millwall, settled by Joe Willock.

Winning both of their opening two league away games would be a rare feat for the Magpies. The defending is less flattering, with Newcastle having given up a great many shots so far this season.

Amar Dedic came off at half time against Millwall with hamstring discomfort, though it is not thought to be serious. Tino Livramento is in line for a first start of the season if Dedic is not risked.

Joelinton, Dan Burn and William Osula are all expected to remain out until after the international break, while Ewen Jaouen may be back from an ankle issue.

Newcastle have the better of the recent record between the clubs. Their 4-3 win at St James’ Park in January was settled by a Harvey Barnes goal deep into stoppage time, long after most of the ground had given up on it.
