What channel is Torreense v Sunderland on?

TNT Sports have every Europa League game, and with a full round going across the evening this one takes the early 17.45 slot rather than the main 20.00 block. HBO Max carries the same coverage for anyone streaming.

Bournemouth v Sturm Graz and Lyon v Crystal Palace are also on tonight, both later, so there is British interest either side of this one. There is no free-to-air option for the Europa League.

The venue is the first oddity.

Torreense’s own ground does not meet UEFA standards, so this is being played at the Estadio Dr Magalhaes Pessoa in Leiria, almost 100km north. It is their first ‘home’ European tie, played somewhere that is not really home.

They have not played in Portugal’s top division since 1992 and reached this competition by beating Sporting Lisbon in the Taca de Portugal final. The league phase opened with a 2-1 win away at Lillestrom, achieved with ten men.

Domestic life has been harder, with one win from seven leaving them 15th in the second tier. A 1-0 defeat at Tondela last weekend came in a chaotic game that produced four red cards and a winner deep into stoppage time.

Sunderland are in Europe for the first time in 53 years and won their opener 1-0 against AZ Alkmaar through an Enzo Le Fee penalty. The Premier League has been considerably less kind.

Four defeats from their opening six league games leave them 17th, a point above the relegation zone, and Brighton beat them 2-0 at the Stadium of Light last weekend. They are still waiting on a first away win of the season.
