Formula 1 arrives at Monte Carlo on Sunday for the most famous race on the calendar. The Monaco Grand Prix has been part of the championship since the very first season in 1950, and it remains the one race that every driver on the grid wants to win above all others.
The narrow streets of Monte Carlo make overtaking nearly impossible, which means qualifying on Saturday afternoon is as important as the race itself. Grid position is everything here, and a single mistake against the barriers can end a weekend in an instant.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli arrives having won four of the first five races of the season for Mercedes.
The 19 year old Italian has been in outstanding form, but Monaco is a circuit that does not always reward the fastest car, and his team mate George Russell will be looking to close a 43 point gap after his retirement in Canada.
Charles Leclerc is the man most fancied to end Mercedes’ run.
The Ferrari driver grew up on these streets and has known the circuit since childhood, and his record at Monaco in qualifying is remarkable.
He won here in 2024 and holds the record for the most pole positions in the modern F1 era. Lewis Hamilton, who lives locally and has three Monaco wins to his name, is also expected to be in contention.
Lando Norris is the defending champion after winning in Monaco last year, while Max Verstappen claimed Red Bull’s first podium of the 2026 season in Canada and will be looking to build on that here.
Alpine’s Franco Colapinto has been one of the stories of the season so far, finishing sixth in Canada, and the street circuit could suit his aggressive style.
