Manchester United face a promoted side for the second week running, having come unstuck against the first one.
Michael Carrick’s team were beaten 2-0 at Hull City on the opening day, a first ever top flight defeat to the Tigers and the first time United had lost to a promoted side on the opening weekend in 14 attempts.
They had 21 attempts at goal in that game without creating much of real danger, which is the obvious thing to fix.
Carlos Baleba will have to wait for his debut after arriving with an ankle injury. Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte are all unavailable.
Ipswich could hardly have asked for more from their return to the top flight, beating Sunderland 2-1 through Jack Clarke’s 90th-minute winner against his old club.
Gary O’Neil took over from Kieran McKenna in the summer and spent more than £100m, with seven new signings featuring on the opening day.
A 3-1 EFL Cup win over Leicester City followed on Tuesday, Marcelino Nunez scoring twice including a strike from 45 yards.
Azor Matusiwa and Florentino Luis remain out for the visitors, who have not won at Old Trafford in their last eight visits.
