Celtic Park in Scotland is set to remain witness to a UEL league phase encounter when home team Celtic FC play host to visitors AS Roma on Thursday.

Celtic FC will be entering the fixture against AS Roma under a new leader; Wilfried Nancy was appointed as the Bhoys’ new gaffer after the departure of interim boss Martin O’Neill. However, Nancy was welcomed to Scottish football with a loss; the Frenchman had to oversee his team getting defeated 2-1 by league leaders Hearts.

The match on Thursday will, therefore, be an opportunity for Nancy to prove his worth to the Celtic faithful. A win would highly increase the Scottish side’s chances of finishing within the top 24. Incidentally, this is the first time that the two teams would be meeting each other in any competition.

AS Roma are currently on 15th position on the league phase points table, and a mere point away from a much coveted top 8 position. A win on Thursday would also be a huge moral victory; if AS Roma manage to prevail over Celtic, this will be the first instance in 12 seasons of both Celtic and Rangers getting defeated at home by the same team.

Gian Piero Gasperini will be eager to win the fixture on Thursday in order to provide his team with some much-needed momentum, something that the Giallorossi have somewhat lost owing to consecutive Serie A losses against Napoli and Cagliari.

As things stand, this first meeting between Celtic and Roma should result in a draw, albeit a highly entertaining one.
