Both sides come into this one hunting a way clear of the bottom three, with Bolton 21st and Cardiff a place above them. Between them they have managed one league win all season.

That win came on the opening weekend, when Bolton beat Preston North End 2-1. Nothing has gone right since, with a goalless draw at QPR followed by a home defeat to Lincoln City and then three more losses.

Sheffield United, Millwall and West Ham have all put several past them across those three games, and only Burnley have been leakier this season.

There is something to build on at the other end, with Steven Schumacher’s side scoring twice in two of their last three league outings. A goalkeeping error contributed to Tuesday’s 3-2 home defeat to the Hammers.

Sam Dalby was withdrawn late in that game with an injury, which could open the door for Ryan Hardie. Lewis Brunt is expected to remain out with a hamstring problem, and Luca Stephenson and Akin Famewo may also miss out.

Cardiff finished above Bolton in League One last season but are yet to win in the second tier. Their last victory of any kind came against Swindon Town in the EFL Cup back in August.

It has not been a story of heavy beatings, though. Brian Barry-Murphy’s side have drawn with Wrexham, Derby County, Sheffield United and Stoke City, and have kept most games within reach.
