United need something and the their manager is under immense pressure.
Michael Carrick’s side have not won in seven and were beaten 4-1 at Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the manager under heavy pressure. The league has offered little relief, including a 1-1 draw at Leeds a week ago and another at Old Trafford against Tottenham before that.
Bryan Mbeumo has been the one consistent source of goals. Old Trafford is where both of United’s league wins this season have come, though they have not won there in their last three games in all competitions.
Bournemouth come in on a high.
Marco Rose’s side beat AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality on Thursday, a night on which the Italians finished with ten men and failed to manage a shot on target. That makes three wins on the spin and puts the Cherries joint top of the Europa League table, following the home win over Sturm Graz earlier in the campaign.
Their league season has been far less convincing, with a single win to show for it and a 5-1 defeat at Chelsea among the results. Marcus Tavernier has been the standout, leading the scoring charts at the club in all competitions.
Bournemouth have been a difficult side for United to face in recent seasons, and Old Trafford has not been a happy ground for the hosts against them.
