Lennie James has been cast as the lead in Critical, a new medical drama series commissioned by Sky1. Created by Jed Mercurio, the series offers a real-time look at the golden hour—the first sixty minutes after a life-threatening injury—within a state-of-the-art trauma centre.

James plays Glen Boyle, the leader of an elite medical team that must make high-stakes decisions under immense pressure. The show promises a heightened sense of urgency and realism, departing from the emotional arcs of traditional medical dramas.

Mercurio, known for Line of Duty, brings a procedural intensity to Critical, with each episode focusing on a single patient’s journey. The series is set to use cutting-edge visuals and detailed medical sequences to heighten the realism.

Filming is underway, with the series expected to debut later this year.
