Celtic v Ferencvaros TV coverage

Celtic are in this competition because of one of the worst nights in the club’s recent history. Three goals up from the first leg against LASK Linz and 4-0 ahead on aggregate early in the second, Martin O’Neill’s side conceded five without reply and went out 5-4.

Four straight Scottish Premiership wins suggested they had put it behind them, and then came Sunday and a 3-0 defeat to Rangers in the League Cup quarter-final at Ibrox.

Celtic Park is where the recovery has to start.

They are unbeaten in their last 10 at home, though this is a competition in which home form deserted them last season. Two of their four league phase games at Celtic Park were lost, and Stuttgart won 4-1 there in the first leg of the knockout playoff.

Callum Osmand, Alistair Johnston and Jota are all injured, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is serving a suspension carried over from his time at Besiktas. O’Neill is expected to change things after the weekend, with Auston Trusty, Haissem Hassan and Jordan Lotomba among those pushing to come in.

Ferencvaros have lost one of their opening 15 matches in all competitions, winning 10 and drawing four, and are unbeaten in their last eight. Vojvodina, Twente, Gornik Zabrze and Trabzonspor were all seen off in qualifying, the last of them 5-0 on aggregate.

Balazs Borbely has a fully fit squad, which few managers can say on matchday one. Lenny Joseph scored four times in qualifying but has not found the net in the seven games since.

The Hungarians have reached the knockout stages in each of the last two seasons without travelling especially well, losing seven of their 11 away games in the competition proper over that period, though they did stay unbeaten on the road through qualifying this term. They also have something to settle here, having lost twice to Celtic in the 2021-22 group stage.
