After ending last season with a few losses, Eddie Howe’s side secured a Champions League place thanks to results elsewhere and are now working to find form before their league opener at Aston Villa on August 16.

Newcastle still have two more friendlies to play against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid and will be hoping to see sharper performances from a squad still tuning up for the season ahead.

Espanyol arrive in good shape.

The Catalan club narrowly avoided relegation last term, finishing 14th in La Liga, but have looked solid in recent weeks.

The Spanish side are unbeaten in five friendlies, winning four and drawing one, despite losing their first-choice goalkeeper earlier this summer.

Having tested themselves against clubs from England, Germany, and Spain, Espanyol will be aiming to maintain momentum before beginning their La Liga campaign against Atletico Madrid on August 17.

Friday’s clash offers both sides a valuable opportunity to fine tune their squads before competitive football returns next week.
