The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, run in honour of Michael O’Sullivan, is the traditional curtain raiser at the Cheltenham Festival, kicking off four days of top class racing.

As the tapes go up, the famous Cheltenham Roar echoes around Prestbury Park, sending the runners charging towards the first of eight hurdles on the two-mile trip over the Old Course.

Last year, Slade Steel thrived in testing conditions to claim victory in a renewal that lacked standout quality. This season’s contest also looks wide open, but Kopek Des Bordes has emerged as the one to beat.

The Willie Mullins-trained star has shown serious ability, winning both of his starts over hurdles in dominant fashion.

He began with a smooth success in a Fairyhouse maiden, getting the better of Kawaboomga, who will miss Cheltenham through injury, before announcing himself on the big stage with a 13-length demolition in the Grade 1 novice hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival.

Kopek Des Bordes is now odds on favourite with Bet365 to secure another top level success at Cheltenham, and a victory would give favourite backers the perfect start to the Festival.
