Sunderland will be entering the match on the back of a 3-0 beating at the hands of Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian F.C.

Although the match was a testimonial one for current Hearts and ex-Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon, the Black Cats will nonetheless be gutted by the defeat in a match which would have proven as an excellent preparatory stage before the commencement of the 2025-26 Premier League.

Although the match was a testimonial which is usually a more fun affair than a serious one, Sunderland would have loved to pick up a victory as they go on to face Hull City away at their home, to enter the game on a positive note.

The Black Cats have now drawn and lost two games apiece in five of their pre-season fixtures; they won one against South Shields.

Hull City have been in great form in this pre-season, and they will be entering the match against Sunderland on the back of a 1-0 victory over League One club Stockport County in their latest meeting.

A solitary strike from forward Mason Burstow  took Hull City over the finish line as the Tigers secured a victory in four pre-season fixtures on the trot: they registered wins previously over Istanbulspor and Kasimpasa of Türkiye and Grimsby Town.

The head to head record of the Black Cats and the Tigers over the last five matches has been perfectly balanced: two wins each, and a solitary draw.
