Liverpool are unbeaten, and almost nobody around Anfield seems cheered by it. Saturday’s goalless draw with Fulham produced next to nothing in the final third, and six points from 12 leaves them seventh.
They did beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League on 9 September, which is the only time they have won at home in three attempts this season.
Andoni Iraola will change the team heavily after a week that visibly drained it, with Wataru Endo due his first minutes of the campaign and Trey Nyoni pushing for a midfield start. Liverpool have won this competition 10 times, more than anyone else, and an eleventh is worth chasing even with a league campaign and a Champions League run to manage.
Tottenham are in a worse place entirely. Four league games have brought two points and no goals whatsoever, the worst start in front of goal the club has ever made, and it follows a summer of serious spending. Roberto De Zerbi is under enough pressure that he may name a far stronger side than a third round tie would normally get.
A goalless draw with Everton was their most recent outing, coming after a home defeat to Newcastle. Pedro Porro sat that one out with a muscle problem nobody seems worried about, though Archie Gray will probably keep the right-back shirt anyway.
Andrew Robertson comes back to Anfield for the first time since leaving on a free in the summer, ending nine years on Merseyside. He will find little comfort in the record between these two, with Spurs winning just twice in the last 20 meetings and losing 14 of them.
