Manchester United have begun the search for a new permanent manager after confirming the departure of Ruben Amorim, with betting markets already forming around who could take charge next at Old Trafford.
Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to Leeds United proved to be Amorim’s final match after a 14 month spell in charge. The result capped a difficult period for the club, despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe having publicly backed the Portuguese coach in October, handing him a three year mandate to steady the ship.
Next Permanent Manchester Utd Manager
Darren Fletcher – 7/4
Oliver Glasner – 4/1
Gareth Southgate – 6/1
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 7/1
Enzo Maresca – 8/1
Kieran McKenna – 10/1
Xavi Hernandez – 10/1
Michael Carrick 10/1
Thomas Tuchel – 12/1
Eddie Howe – 14/1
Unai Emery – 16/1
Andoni Iraola – 16/1
Amorim exits with United sitting sixth in the Premier League, having struggled for consistency throughout his tenure.
His time in charge included the club’s worst ever Premier League finish last season, when United ended the campaign in 15th place, their lowest position in the modern era.
Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in interim charge with immediate effect.
Fletcher, a popular figure at the club, made more than 200 appearances during his playing career and is seen internally as a calm and respected presence.
He has already been installed among the leading candidates to take the role on a permanent basis, with bookmakers viewing him as a serious contender.
Current Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is also prominent in the betting. Glasner has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Selhurst Park and is understood to be open to a new challenge, with a switch to Old Trafford likely to appeal should United formalise their interest.
Another name attracting attention is Enzo Maresca, who is currently available following his recent exit from Chelsea. Maresca’s standing in the game and existing relationships within English football have seen him emerge as a credible option in the early markets.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate is also among those being linked with the role.
While Southgate has not managed at club level since his time at Middlesbrough, his experience on the international stage and reputation for man management continue to appeal to decision makers and bettors alike.
With United still in the hunt for a top four finish and the second half of the season approaching, the club are expected to move quickly in clarifying their long term plans.
For now, Fletcher will be tasked with steadying performances on the pitch as speculation intensifies over who will be trusted to lead Manchester United into their next chapter.
