Van Veen arrives in the last four riding a wave of momentum after producing one of the performances of the tournament to defeat Luke Humphries in the quarter finals.

That victory not only secured an extra £100,000 in prize money but also elevated the Dutchman to world number three and crowned him the new Dutch number one, ending a 13 year hold on that title by Michael van Gerwen.

His display against Humphries was nothing short of world class. Van Veen averaged 105 and converted 55 per cent of his doubles, numbers that would trouble almost any opponent on the planet. A repeat of that level would put him firmly on course for a maiden World Championship final.

Standing in his way is Anderson, one of the sport’s true greats and a player who knows exactly what it takes to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy.

The Flying Scotsman has rolled back the years at Ally Pally, delivering a series of standout performances including a demolition of Van Gerwen and a thrilling tie break victory over Jermaine Wattimena, a match that produced 24 maximums between the pair.

Both semi finalists come into the contest in outstanding form and there is an expectation of heavy scoring throughout.

Anderson has long been renowned as one of the game’s most prolific 180 hitters, while Van Veen’s ability to stack the treble 20 has become one of the defining features of his rapid rise.

Despite Anderson’s experience and pedigree, Van Veen’s recent consistency and scoring power suggest he may just have the edge. The Dutchman has already shown he can beat the very best on the biggest stages and has even traded wins with Luke Littler on television this year, underlining his credentials as a future world champion.

There is also hope that this pairing could finally deliver the tournament’s first nine dart finish. Anderson has already come agonisingly close in this championship and with both players capable of pushing each other to extraordinary heights, perfection may yet be on the cards.

While Anderson will punish any lapse in concentration, Van Veen’s performance against Humphries suggests mistakes may be few and far between.

If he can maintain that standard, the Dutch star should have just enough scoring power to edge a tight and high quality semi final.

With a place in the final on the line, all four remaining players will believe this is their moment. For now, the stage is set for an enthralling night at Alexandra Palace, with the prospect of a Littler versus Van Veen final edging ever closer.
