Hull were most people’s favourites for relegation before a ball was kicked, and they have spent three weeks proving everyone wrong.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side beat Manchester United 2-0 on the opening weekend and followed it with a 1-0 win at Coventry, both without conceding.

A third clean sheet win would make Jakirovic only the fourth manager to start his Premier League career that way, after Jose Mourinho, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Arne Slot.

Six deadline day arrivals took Hull’s summer intake to 18 players. Christos Mouzakitis and Tim Iroegbunam could go straight into midfield, with Brooke Norton-Cuffy pushing Lewie Coyle at right wing-back.

Jack Butland, Oscar Zambrano, Elliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi and Charlie Hughes are all out. Joe Gelhardt is back in training after an ankle problem.

Villa could hardly be in worse shape. Beaten 4-0 at Brighton and then 1-0 at home by Arsenal on Monday, Unai Emery’s side are pointless and goalless in 19th.

They are the only club in the division yet to register a shot on target, something no side has managed to avoid across their opening three games since records began in 2003-04.

Losing Ollie Watkins is telling. Villa have lost their last four league games without him by an aggregate of 10-1.

Joao Gomes is serving the second game of a three-match ban and Amadou Onana remains a long-term absentee. Leon Goretzka could make a full debut, with Ibrahim Mbaye and Taylor Harwood-Bellis also in contention after deadline day moves.

The head to head reads well for the visitors, who have won six of eight top flight meetings with Hull. The Tigers have won only one of the last 16 games between the clubs, back in February 2015.
