Where to watch Coventry v Aston Villa
Sky Sports+ has Coventry v Aston Villa, with coverage from kick off at 20.00 BST on Wednesday 16 September 2026 at the Coventry Building Society Arena. It is a stream within Sky Sports rather than a channel in its own right, which is what lets Sky run the whole third round programme at once.
These two have not met since May 2001, when a Villa win sent Coventry down from the top flight. A quarter of a century and one Championship title later the Sky Blues are back, and the return has been brutal.
Four league games have produced four defeats, no goals at all and 10 conceded. Brighton put five past them on Sunday once Taiwo Awoniyi had been sent off and left Frank Lampard’s side a man short for most of the second half.
The cup has been the one bit of relief.
Awoniyi opened the scoring in a 4-2 win at Plymouth Argyle in the second round, which remains Coventry’s only victory of the season. His league suspension starts this weekend, so tonight is the last they will see of him for a while.
Haji Wright, Josh Eccles, Luke Woolfenden and Kaine Kesler-Hayden are all still unavailable, the last of those a Villa academy product. Sidiki Cherif has just made his first appearance since signing in the summer and comes into contention, while Ellis Simms may not be fit enough to feature after missing out at the weekend.
Villa ended a long wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League last season, since when almost nothing has gone to plan. A turbulent transfer window has been followed by a single point from their opening Premier League games.
Saturday brought a 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, Alysson hauling them level before Igor Jesus won it late. They had at least taken a 3-2 win away at Club Brugge in the Champions League before that, having earlier been held to a goalless draw by Hull City in the league.
Leon Goretzka, Brian Madjo and Amadou Onana are out, with Matty Cash, Ian Maatsen and Pau Torres all in some doubt. Johan Manzambi came back against Forest and Joao Gomes is available again having completed a three-match ban. Unai Emery is expected to rotate heavily, which could mean first starts for Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Ibrahim Mbaye.
Villa won this competition in 1994 and 1996 but have got past the third round only once in the last six seasons, so Coventry may find them beatable. The clubs have never met in the League Cup, and their last knockout tie was an FA Cup fifth round 28 years ago that the Sky Blues won 1-0.
