England Women host Ukraine in their final Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifier on Tuesday night, but the Lionesses arrive at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium in a very different mood to what had been expected just a week ago.
A 4-0 defeat to Spain in Mallorca last Friday was England’s heaviest loss under Sarina Wiegman, and it handed top spot in Group A3 to the world champions. England, who had won their previous four qualifying games including a 1-0 win over Spain at Wembley in April, now need a favour from Iceland against Spain to have any chance of automatic qualification for Brazil 2027.
Whatever happens in Reykjavik, England must win this game. Anything less would leave the door open for a play-off route, though the Lionesses are heavy favourites against a Ukraine side that has lost all five of their qualifying matches and conceded 16 goals in the process.
The most recent meeting between the sides ended in a 6-1 win for England in March, with Alessia Russo scoring twice, Georgia Stanway netting a brace and Jess Park adding two more. Wiegman will demand a similar showing from her side on Tuesday night.
Captain Leah Williamson missed the Spain defeat and is expected to be absent again, but Ukraine do not carry the same attacking threat as the Spanish side. Russo, Stanway and Lauren James are all expected to feature with England needing goals to boost their goal difference should results go in their favour.
This will also be the first time an England team has played at the Hill Dickinson Stadium since it opened in August 2025, making it a historic occasion for supporters in the north-west who will be hoping to send the Lionesses into the summer on a high.
