Both clubs come into the season with promotion ambitions. Southampton are looking to bounce back after Premier League relegation, while Wrexham continue their remarkable rise through the leagues, now playing second tier football for the first time in 43 years following three consecutive promotions.

The Saints had a mixed pre season, winning just two of their six warm up games.

New boss Will Still is hoping an attacking front line, including Adam Armstrong and Cameron Archer, can compensate for ongoing defensive concerns.

Southampton conceded in five of their six pre season outings and kept only two clean sheets at home in the league last season.

Injury doubts remain over Will Smallbone and Flynn Downes, while Ben Brereton is sidelined.

Wrexham arrive full of belief after a strong finish to their League One campaign and have strengthened over the summer with the arrivals of Jack Cork, Kieffer Moore, Danny Ward, and Josh Windass.

While key players like Elliot Lee and Ollie Rathbone are unavailable, the Welsh side’s confident, attacking style could pose problems for the hosts.

Phil Parkinson’s team are expected to line up in a 3-5-2 formation designed to press and counter with pace.

With both teams likely to go for goals, the stage is set for an entertaining season opener on the South Coast.
