ITV Orders Queen Victoria Drama from Mammoth Screen

ITV has commissioned an eight-part historical drama series focusing on the early life of Queen Victoria. The series, titled Victoria, is produced by Mammoth Screen, known for their work on acclaimed dramas such as Poldark and Endeavour. Created and written by novelist Daisy Goodwin in her screenwriting debut, the series delves into the young queen’s ascent to the throne at the age of 18 and her subsequent challenges in balancing personal desires with royal duties.

The lead role of Queen Victoria is portrayed by Jenna Coleman, whose casting was pivotal in bringing the character to life. Goodwin emphasized the importance of finding an actress who could embody Victoria’s youth and determination, qualities that Coleman captures effectively. The series also features Rufus Sewell as Lord Melbourne, Victoria’s first prime minister and close confidant, whose relationship with the queen plays a central role in the narrative.

Filming took place across various locations in the UK, including Yorkshire, to authentically represent the period setting. The production team aimed to depict the vibrancy and challenges of early Victorian Britain, focusing on the queen’s personal growth and the political landscape of the time.

Victoria premiered on ITV on August 28, 2016, and received positive reviews for its engaging storytelling and strong performances. The series was renewed for a second season, which aired in 2017, and a Christmas special followed in December of the same year. A third series was announced in December 2017, continuing the exploration of Queen Victoria’s reign and personal life.

The collaboration between ITV and Mammoth Screen has been successful, resulting in a series that resonates with audiences and provides a fresh perspective on a historical figure. Victoria stands out as a significant contribution to British historical drama, offering insight into the complexities of monarchy and the personal journey of one of Britain’s most iconic rulers.
