Poldark star Aidan Turner has been tapped to play Leonardo da Vinci in Leonardo, an eight episode event series about the life of the hero at the heart of the Renaissance that hails from Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files, The Man In The High Castle).
Leonardo tells the story of the artist. Born in Vinci, in Tuscany, Leonardo grew into an unparalleled genius whose work inspired and overturned the established order. His restless curiosity flitted between art, science, painting, engineering, anatomy and poetry, all of it informed by a deep and fearless humanity, completely liberated from the conventions of his time and determined to unfold the mysteries of the world around him.
Spotnitz created the series alongside Sherlock and Deep State scribe Steve Thompson and his indie Big Light Productions is producing alongside Lux Vide. Daniel Percival, who previously worked with Spotnitz on Strike Back and The Man In The High Castle, is directing. The English language series is being produced for The Alliance – a group comprising Rai in Italy, ZDF in Germany, and France Télévisions in France.
“Capturing the character of Leonardo has been one of the most fascinating and exciting challenges of my career”, Spotnitz said. “It’s hard to fathom that a man this extraordinary could even have existed, let alone the human impulses that drove him to achieve such extraordinary things. It’s been enormously rewarding and an absolute joy collaborating with Steve Thompson, Daniel Percival and our partners at Lux Vide and RAI to bring Leonardo to life.”
While co-creator Steve Thompson added: “Leonardo is a captivating genius and it has been a thrill to explore his work and his character. Each of his works has a uniquely fascinating story behind its creation. I am delighted to have collaborated with Frank and our creative team to tell his extraordinary story.”
