BBC One has set a UK premiere date for Gentleman Jack, with the eight-part historical drama to begin on Sunday May 19th at 9pm.
Created and written by Sally Wainwright, the series is a co-production between BBC One and HBO, drawn from the real coded diaries of Anne Lister, the nineteenth-century Yorkshire landowner and industrialist. It is set in and around Halifax in the 1830s.
Suranne Jones stars as Lister, with Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker, the neighbouring landowner she sets out to court. The drama charts Lister’s return to her ancestral home of Shibden Hall, her efforts to revive the estate and its collieries, and her determination to live openly on her own terms.
The series premiered in the United States on HBO on April 22nd.
