ITV is adding to the cast of Marcella. Hugo Speer (The Musketeers, Britannia, The Full Monty) and Amanda Burton (Waterloo Road, Silent Witness) have joined the cast of the Anna Friel fronted drama for season three. Speer’s promotion to series regular comes after he made a brief appearance in the season two finale.
Marcella follows the eponymous character who, following the end of her marriage and her daughter’s move to boarding school, returns to The Met’s elite Murder Squad. A spate of recent killings have occurred which bear the hallmarks of unsolved murders committed when she was last on the force, more than a decade ago. Marcella is immediately assigned to the case she first worked on in 2003. The killer was never caught and more bodies have been discovered with the same MO. Marcella must determine if these are copycat killings or if the undetected murderer from has resurfaced.
In the show’s third season, Marcella is in Belfast as an undercover detective. She has taken on a new identity, Keira, and has infiltrated the infamous Maguire crime family but as she investigates their activities, questions come to the fore about how much she’s embraced the Keira personality and left Marcella behind. There are interweaving storylines with strands focusing upon the Maguires’ criminal operations. As she inhabits the character of Keira, Marcella’s quest for the truth puts her in danger and others in harm’s way. Her undercover role makes her take risks, but will her old life eventually catch up with her?
Hugo Speer plays Marcella’s undercover handler Frank Young; while Amanda Burton has been cast as Katherine, the matriarch of the Maguire family. They join returning cast members Anna Friel (Broken, American Odyssey) and Ray Panthaki (Colette, One Crazy Thing). Rounding out the cast is Aaron McCusker (Bohemian Rhapsody, Fortitude, Shameless), Kelly Gough (The Fall, Broadchurch),Martin McCann (Death & Nightingales, The Frankenstein Chronicles), Eugene O’Hare (The Fall, Death & Nightingales), Michael Colgan (X Company, My Mother and Other Strangers), Paul Kennedy (Death & Nightingales, No Offence) and Glen Wallace (River City, The Secret).
Marcella was created by Hans Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder is produced by Buccaneer Media. Rosenfeldt wrote the first two episodes and storylined episodes three to eight. Other writers include David Allison (Bedlam, The Case), Rachel Flowerday (Father Brown, The Moonstone) Mike Walden (The Frankenstein Chronicle), Matthew Thomas (The Chameleon, Valentine’s Kiss) and Tim Loane (Das Boot, Versailles). Elliott Swift is the series producer, while Gilles Bannier and Ashley Pearce are directing. The executive producers are Hans Rosenfeldt, Buccaneer Media’s founder Tony Wood and Anna Friel. Netflix serves as the global broadcaster outside of the UK. Production is now underway in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
