Universal TV Acquires Canadian Legal Drama ‘Burden Of Truth’

Universal TV is adding another Canadian drama series to their line-up. The NBCU owned and operated channel has secured exclusive first run UK rights to CBC’s Erin-Brockovich style legal drama Burden Of Truth, starring Beauty & The Beast‘s Kristin Kreuk, after striking a deal with international distributor Entertainment One (eOne).

Created by Bradley Simpson (Rookie Blue, King), Burden Of Truth follows fast-rising corporate attorney Joanna Hanley (Kreuk), who returns to her small hometown of Millwood – a prairie town with an industrial past and uncertain future – to take on what she thinks is a simple case, only to find herself in a fight for justice for a group of sick girls. The show’s first season will premiere on Universal on Tuesday August 14th at 9pm with a double-bill.

The drama series, which has already been renewed for a second season, is produced by ICF Films, Entertainment One (eOne) and Eagle Vision and in addition to Kristin Kreuk, also stars: Peter Mooney (Rookie Blue, Camelot), Alex Carter (NCIS, Ransom), Ben Ayres (Saving Hope, Bitten), Nicola Correia-Damude(Margarita, Hellmington), Meegwun Fairbrother (Hemlock Grove, Helix) and emerging Indigenous actor Star Slade. The executive producers are Ilana Frank, Linda Pope, Jocelyn Hamilton and Kristin Kreuk.

At the recently re-branded Universal TV, Burden Of Truth joins a slate of first run series that includes fellow Canadian import Private Eyes, as well as U.S. series Chicago Med, The Resident and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and international dramas Gone and Ransom. The NBCU owned and operated channel is also expected to pick up at least one new series out of Hollywood following the recent LA Screenings.

This deal further extends the relationship between Universal and eOne. The two companies previously pacted together to bring such shows as Rookie BluePrivate EyesRansom and Haven to the UK market. The independent studio has also recently concluded deals with Channel 5 for Designated Survivor and The Detail, and E4 for comedy series Let’s Get Physical.
