ITV has released a first look image as Kieran Bew (Da Vinci’s Demons) in costume as the titular character in their upcoming 13 episode drama series Beowulf, which hails from executive producers James Dormer, Tim Haines, Katie Newman and ITV’s sister company ITV Studios.

Described as a re-imagining of the classic tale, Beowulf follows the eponymous character who, after spending many years wandering as a mercenary warrior, returns to Herot to pay his respects to the recently deceased Hrothgar. But when Herot is attacked by the terrifying monster Grendl, Beowulf has no choice but to hunt it down, winning favour with Herot’s new female Thane, and the wider community, in the process.

The cast is being led by Kieran Bew (Da Vinci’s Demons) as Beowulf and also includes William Hurt (Humans) as Hrothgar, Joanne Whalley (Wolf Hall) as Rheda, Ed Speleers (Downton Abbey) as Slean and David Ajala (Black Box) as Rate. Ian Puleston-Davies, Ellora Torchia, Gisli Orn Gardarsson Susan Aderin, Kirsty Oswald, Laura Donnelly, Edward Hogg, Alex Price, Jack Rowan, Itoya Osagiede and David Harewood also star.

Co-created by James Dormer, Tim Haines and Katie Newman, Beowulf is being produced by ITV’s sister company ITV Studios, who have been behind such efforts as Vera and Mr Selfridge. James Dormer, who has written extensively for the Sky1/Cinemax co-pro Strike Back, is penning the scripts and will executive produce alongside ITV Studios’ Tim Haines and Katie Newman. Production is now underway in County Durham and Northumberland for a 2016 premiere.
