TruTV UK is set to air an unscripted entry which is being hailed as “the first-ever reality musical”.
The Turner owned channel, which launched in the UK last Summer, has acquired the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to unscripted series Branson Famous, TVWise has learned. The 12 episode “musical reality” will premiere on TruTV UK on Thursday April 9th at 9pm.
Originally commissioned and produced for the US TruTV network, Branson Famous follows the Mabe family who own one of the longest-running variety shows in Branson, Missouri, as they struggle to save their 55 year-old show from financial decline. The series, which has yet to be renewed for a second season, is produced by Road to Awe Entertainment. Anna Rodzinski is the executive producer.
“As the world’s first ever reality musical, Branson Famous really is breaking the TV mould. It’s a fly-on-the-wall look at a family striving to make their business survive but with one major difference, the drama unfolds with hilarious sing-offs between the main characters”, said Turner UK’s Jane Mote. “I’ve never seen anything like it and it works brilliantly. It’s guaranteed to make viewers laugh and enter into the showbiz fun.”
Branson Famous is the latest US series that TruTV UK has snapped up since its launch last year. The acquisition comes out of the pipeline from the US TruTV network, which has previously given TruTV UK the rights to such series as Container Wars, South Beach Tow, Tattoo Nightmares, The Carbonaro Effect and Total Blackout.
The acquisition comes mere weeks after Turner UK’s Managing Director Neil McDonough brought on former UKTV exec Jane Mote as interim director of general entertainment channels and BBC Worldwide’s Sabina McNally as acquisitions manager. He also recently announced that TruTV UK was in the market for co-productions, in a bid to expand the channel’s line up beyond content acquired out of the US pipeline.
