Damien Molony (Being Human, Ripper Street), Fay Ripley (Cold Feet) and Clare-Hope Ashitey (Top Boy) have joined the cast of Channel 5’s upcoming original drama series Suspects (formerly known as Evidence), TVWise has learned. The 10 episode series is set to air on Channel 5 in early 2014.
Fay Ripley has been cast as Detective Inspector Martha Bellamy, the witty and warm leader of the police team which is at the core of the series; Damien Molony as Detective Sergeant Jack Weston, a man of action whose easy charm belies his killer gut instinct; and Clare-Hope Ashitey has been cast as Detective Constable Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Steele, a passionate and level headed detective who has a keen eye for detail and whip-smart instincts which help her cut to the heart of any investigation.
Suspects, which is Channel 5’s first original drama in several years, takes a different approach seldom used in the drama genre; namely by having the actors improvise the dialogue and using filming techniques and a directorial approach usually associated with factual programming and fly-on-the-wall documentaries. The drama series follows three core detectives and their distinctive approaches to the job of policing. Each of the ten episodes tells a discrete, self-contained crime story. The episodes start with a news report, then follows the detectives as they investigate the circumstances of the crime, collate and analyse the evidence and interview their suspects until they finally identify and charge the perpetrator. Newman Street are producing the series, with Paul Marquess serving as the executive producer.
