HBO has acquired the US rights to Doll & Em, the Sky Living comedy written by and starring real-life best friends Emily Mortimer and Dolly Wells.

The six-part series follows Em (Mortimer), a film actress shooting a new movie in Los Angeles, who hires her oldest friend Doll (Wells) as her personal assistant after Doll goes through a painful break-up. What begins as a kind gesture slowly tips the balance of their friendship, as the boss-and-assistant dynamic stirs up old insecurities and rivalries between them.

Directed by Azazel Jacobs and largely improvised, the comedy draws on Mortimer and Wells’s own long friendship. It airs on Sky Living in the UK, with HBO now set to bring it to American audiences.
