EXCLUSIVE: Dr Grace Devlin is making a stop in the UK. Multiple sources are telling me that Sky Living has closed a deal with Sony Pictures Television to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to Fox’s short-lived drama series The Mob Doctor. I’m also told that the 13 episode series is slated to bow on the channel this Summer.
Created by Josh Berman and Rob Wright, The Mob Doctor follows Dr Grace Devlin, a top resident at Chicago’s Roosevelt Medical Center. Smart and self-assured, she’s heralded as one of the country’s most promising young surgeons. But family ties keep her glued to her Southside roots. To pay off her brother’s life-threatening gambling debt, she makes a deal with the devil and agrees to work “off book” for the mafia men she once despised. The drama series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and stars Jordana Spiro, William Forsythe, James Carpinello, Zach Gilford, Željko Ivanek, Floriana Lima, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Wendy Makkena and Jesse Lee Soffer.
The Mob Doctor had some strong supporters at Fox, but failed to make any real traction in the ratings and was quickly cancelled by the network. This is the latest acquisition from the 2012-2013 season for Sky Living, the channel previously picked up the exclusive broadcast rights to NBC’s Chicago Fire & Hannibal and CBS’ Elementary. Sky Living was also previously home to Berman’s other series Drop Dead Diva, however, following low ratings the channel opted not to continue with the series, which has since found a home on Netflix. The pick up also comes as international distributor Sony Pictures Television is finalising a deal with a UK broadcaster for NBC’s upcoming drama series The Blacklist, with the series expected to land at BSkyB in the coming weeks.
