Premier League sides Newcastle United and Fulham will lock horns against each other in the quarter-finals stage of the 2025-26 EFL Cup campaign when the Magpies host the London club at St. James’ Park on Wednesday.
The defending champions of the EFL Cup enter the fixture on Wednesday with shaky form and somewhat dull results in their bags; the Magpies lost the Tyne-Wear Derby against Sunderland courtesy of an own goal. This will surely have exasperated both Eddie Howe and the fans, who find their team in twelfth position on the league charts.
The EFL Cup campaign, however, has been perfect so far for the reigning champions. Newcastle United registered comfortable victories against Bradford City and Tottenham Hotspur en route to this quarter-final clash, and will now be looking to beat Fulham in just the fourth League Cup meeting between the two sides.
Fulham, on their part, registered wins against Bristol City, Cambridge United and Wycombe Wanderers en route to qualification to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. Marco Silva and his men will now look to secure their spots in the semi-finals with a win against a team they have already lost to once this season; the Magpies defeated Fulham 2-1 in an English top-flight fixture at the home of the former.
If Fulham do manage to go all the way and win the competition, it will be the London side’s first League Cup victory. However, their current league standings are not too bright. Silva’s men are currently on the spot below that of Newcastle, although, unlike the latter, they did win their last outing against Burnley.
If current situations are to be taken into account, the 90 minutes and extra time may very well end in a draw, and the result, in all possibilities, will then have to be decided on a penalty shootout.
