Manchester United return to Premier League action on Wednesday evening with a trip to Burnley, as a new chapter begins at Old Trafford following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Team News

Darren Fletcher has typically favoured a 4-2-3-1 system during his time in charge of Manchester United’s Under 18s and that shape could be carried into the first team.

That would allow Diogo Dalot to operate at right back, with Luke Shaw returning to his preferred role on the left.

In central defence, Fletcher confirmed on Tuesday that Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire remain sidelined through injury.

That leaves Lisandro Martinez likely to partner either Leny Yoro or Ayden Heaven, with the latter having caught the eye during the closing matches of Ruben Amorim’s spell in charge.

United are short of options in the wide areas due to the absence of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, both of whom are away at the Africa Cup of Nations. As a result, Matheus Cunha could be pushed out to the left, with Mason Mount a possible option on the right.

In attack, it remains difficult to see Joshua Zirkzee displacing Benjamin Sesko from the starting role, despite Zirkzee’s positive influence from the bench and his assist for Cunha’s equaliser at Elland Road in the previous outing.

Can Fletcher turn things around at Utd?

The match at Turf Moor will be United’s first since Amorim was sacked on Monday, with former midfielder Darren Fletcher taking charge on an interim basis. Fletcher has stepped up from his role within the club’s academy setup and will be tasked with steadying the side during a turbulent period.

United head into the fixture sitting in the upper half of the Premier League, but recent performances have raised concerns.

A run of inconsistent results ultimately cost Amorim his job, and the pressure is now on Fletcher to spark an immediate response.

Burnley, meanwhile, are in desperate need of points. The Clarets sit nine points adrift of safety in the relegation zone and are running out of time to turn their season around.

With home games becoming increasingly crucial, Turf Moor will be hoping to play its part in lifting the side on Wednesday night.
