Liverpool v Chelsea on TV today

Liverpool have been on a roll since their only defeat of the season, a 3-0 loss at home to Manchester City that turned once Ryan Gravenberch was sent off. Four straight wins have followed, including a 6-3 win at LASK Linz, a 2-1 win at Brentford and a comeback from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 in the Champions League.

Sunday’s 2-0 win over Brighton brought a first clean sheet in five, and Andoni Iraola’s side reached this stage by beating Tottenham 3-1 in the third round.

With Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, Iraola is expected to rest Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, and Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz could all be given the night off. Wirtz went off against Brighton with a foot problem but has played down fears of anything serious.

Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha, who set up two goals against Villarreal, should play big parts in attack, with James McConnell and Lewis Koumas also in line for starts. Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Munoz are doubts, while Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni are all out.

Chelsea continue to blow hot and cold under Xabi Alonso. A week after winning at Everton, they were outplayed by Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and lost 2-0, a result that could easily have been heavier.

The cup run has been more convincing, with a 2-0 win over Luton Town followed by a 6-3 thriller against Leeds in the third round. Alonso returns to Anfield, where he played for so long, for his first visit as Chelsea manager, having lost on both of his previous trips there as a coach.

Cole Palmer is suspended after his red card against Spurs, and Reece James and Emiliano Martinez are both injured. Joao Pedro, Pep Chavarria, Emmanuel Emegha and Jamie Gittens will be assessed, while Estevao is expected to make his first start in over a month, and Jordan Henderson could return to his old ground in midfield. Danny Welbeck and Morgan Rogers are options in attack.

The tie renews a cup rivalry that includes the 2024 final at Wembley, which Liverpool won after extra time.
